  • Engineering point of view :

    'Shell and Tube' Heat-Exchangers are widely spread in the field of chemical engineering. Still it is not clear how to arrange the tubes inside the apparatus in order to get a optimal heat-transfer-behaviour. beginning from a simple configuration with only one tube(Rad = 1.5) we studied cases from 1x1 to 5x5 tube arrangements for constant circumference as well as constant area.

    My task is creating a 5x5 tube structure(i.e 25 circles). The sum of circumference for all the 25(5x5) tubes is equal to circumference as the tube in 1x1 structure.


  • Mathematical point of view :

    We studied a 2D cutplane of the above described apparatus. Fluid flow calculation in a square of 4 units with 25 circles each of radius 0.06, with the first circle located at x = 0.667 y = 0.667. The calculations start from rest. The following is observed with the Reynolds number, Re = 1000. This simulation is part of a Software-Praktikum at the University of Dortmund in 2004'.
