Short description and remarks

Channel flow over a square cavity at low Reynolds number, starting from rest. The flow shows some interesting transient behaviour, but it gets steady in the limit.

This simulation is one of the oldest in the 'Virtual Album', and it is a student version!

Visualization

  • Distribution of temperature/concentration via Boussinesq model

Visualization via temperature distribution from the heated walls (first and second, with different colour maps, 1.7 MB and 2.2 MB).

  • Pressure

Visualization via pressure plots, shaded (first, 2 MB) and via isolines (second, 10 MB). Due to some irregularities during the startup, the pressure is extremely hard to visualize due to differences in the magnitude of factor 1000 between early iterates and the final solution. For the shaded version, we let the range of the pressure "free" (this explains the fast changement of the colour areas), while the second video starts after 3 seconds only, but with a fixed range of values.

  • Streamfunction

Visualization via streamline plots, shaded (first, 0.9 MB) and via isolines (second, 5.3 MB). Again, the visualization is difficult since the most interesting flow inside the cavity has a very small range only. The second video shows the streamlines mainly in the cavity.

  • Velocity

Visualization via vector plots (7.0 MB),
