Mathematical details

Description of the flow problem

  • length/height of box: 3/4.8
  • width of upper inlet: 0.12
  • inflow b.c.'s: parabolic u-velocity profile at the left edge with constant value of 4.8. From above, the "fast" inflow has a speed of 75 (parabolic profile) with an angle of 45 degree for the entrance.
  • outflow b.c.'s: natural "do nothing" b.c.'s at the right outlet from y=0 until y=2.25
  • other b.c.'s: zero velocity at fixed walls
  • initial condition at t=0: starting from fully developed
  • viscosity parameter: 1/nu=1,000

Description of the spatial discretization

  • coarse mesh (=level 1): 55 cells, 70 vertices, 303 d.o.f.'s

  • uniform refinements with exact boundary adaption
  • visualization on level 5: 14,080 cells, 14,305 vertices, 70,848 d.o.f.`s
  • computational mesh on level 7: 225,280 cells, 226,177 vertices, 1,128,192 d.o.f.`s
  • nonconforming nonparametric rotated bilinear fem's (meanvalue version), UPW

Description of the temporal discretization

  • equidistant time stepping for computation with k=0.00008333334
  • equidistant time stepping for visualization with k= 0.001 (= 1 frame)
  • Total time T=0.5 seconds corresponds to 6,000 time steps
  • fractional step theta scheme

Computer requirements

  • date: 04/07/98
  • simulation by: S.Turek
  • visualization by: S.Turek
  • SUN ULTRA 45/250: 192 MB, 256,680 seconds
