Comparison of different shapes (with/without wind shield or cargo, "flying" version) for trucks at medium Reynolds number

Short description and remarks

Flow around a truck at medium Reynolds number, starting from a fully developed solution. This simulation is part of a comparative study (by students during the FEATFLOW Praktikum 1995/96 at Heidelberg) with the aim to figure out the influence of the wind shield on the top of the truck, for different configurations (see also the results for the "street version"). In all following diagrams, the first column is for a truck with wind shield and cargo, followed by a calculation for a shape without wind shield, but still with cargo, and finally for a truck without wind shield and without cargo! A typical coarse mesh is shown in the following Figure.

The qualitative result was - not very surprising - that the wind shield leads to about 10 % less drag forces in the average. See also the results for the low Reynolds number situations.

For a detailed description of the performed flow configurations look at the corresponding pages in the `Virtual Album'.

Visualization

  • Distribution of temperature/concentration via Boussinesq model

Visualization via tracing of concentration, starting from the inlet (first row), and via temperature distribution, starting from the (interior) heated shape of the truck (second row). The third row gives a zoomed presentation.

  • Pressure

    Visualization via shaded pressure plots.

  • Streamfunction

    Visualization via shaded streamline plots.

  • Velocity

Visualization via vector plots in a zoomed region.
