"Moving Balls" at low Reynolds number

Short description and remarks

The following simulation addresses channel flow around two moving circles. From the left side, some flow is injected with unit velocity. The circles have prescribed motion (after some time!) and are allowed to merge (into "an interior obstacle") or be attached to the channel walls ("no interior objects"). The movement of the circles is prescribed by the "Fictitious Boundary Conditions" only: All calculations are performed on ONE SINGLE mesh!!! This explains why the contour of the circles is sometimes poorly represented, particularly if streamfunction or pressure plots are used!

Visualization

  • Velocity

Visualization via normalized (via color) plots (shaded, 0.7 MB, and vector, 7.1 MB) and "real sized" vectors (4.6 MB).

  • Pressure

Visualization via shaded pressure plots (0.6 MB) and via isolines (second, 3.3 MB).

  • Streamfunction

Visualization via shaded streamline plots (0.9 MB) and via isolines (6.6 MB).
