Channel flow around moving flaps (by C.M. Mueller)

The following examples show the flow in a two-dimensional channel with moving flaps, as a sequence of 6 snapshots for a specific configuration (see below), taken at different times of the underlying simulation.

The following simulations are the first step in a study of heart flap movements. Boundary conditions are very simple at this time and so is the geometry of this problem. In addition, the Reynolds number Re was chosen to be quite moderate (as typical for blood flow!) to ensure non-turbulent flow, but nevertheless being nonstationary. Four configurations with different parameters were considered and one of them was simulated twice, the second time on a finer mesh and for higher Re. More information on the method of incorporating moving objects into the simulation can be found in Stefan Turek's CFD-book, Springer.

The complexity of the physical problem depends on the:

  • size of the flaps and the channel
  • inflow speed (v) and angular velocity (w) of the flaps
  • viscosity parameter (1/nu)

A systematic variation of these different configurations is part of the following flow situations.
